Education played a vital role in shaping Hywell’s artistic vision and expertise. He pursued his academic journey at Rhodes University in South Africa, where he obtained a Master’s Degree in Fine Art Photography with Distinction. During his time at Rhodes University, he was fortunate to receive various scholarships and bursaries, including the Rhodes Masters Scholarship, the Raymond Pullen Scholarship for the Arts, and the AGFA Masters and ATS bursaries.
Throughout his career, Hywell has consistently tried to push boundaries and take his craft to new heights. His unique ability to capture the essence of his subjects, combined with his technical skills, have earned him accolades and recognition from peers and clients alike. His inclusion in Phaidon’s BLINK: 100 Contemporary Photographers from around the World further cemented his position as a respected and influential figure in the global photography community. His talent was recognized early on, as he was chosen for the International Prize for Young Photojournalists in 1999 and received the esteemed Young African Photographer Award at Mali’s Recontres de la Photographie Africaine in 2001.
As a testament to his international acclaim, Hywell Waters was among the select few chosen to participate in the prestigious World Press Masterclass held in the Netherlands in 2000, further solidifying his status as a globally respected photographer. With an extensive list of exhibitions held across cities like Algiers, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Bamako, Berlin, Dubai, Honfleur, London, Milan, Paris, Rotterdam, and various cities in South Africa, Hywell has shared his captivating visuals and unique perspectives with diverse audiences worldwide.
